Two years ago, a deer hunter who was trespassing on my property threatened to kill me. I first tried to call a DNR warden, but he was off duty, so I called the sheriff. They would do nothing. I offer this as proof that Iowa’s DNR, along with sheriffs departments, have given hunters in Iowa “favorite son status.”
Iowa has two shotgun deer seasons in December. The first one is five days long, the second is ten days. During these seasons the DNR wardens take company time off. If you need a warden, you won’t find one during hunting season. You’ll get their cell phone messages telling you to call the state police.
I did, in fact, call the state dispatcher last year about illegal hunting, and the dispatcher told me, “If I can find a DNR officer, I will have him call you.” Ninety-five minutes later, a warden called me and said, “Well, I am in your area, but I don’t see anyone!” I replied, “No kidding, I can’t believe they are gone!”
