The following was written by Karen Schumaker in response to an “Uncle Joe” [see Ask Uncle Joe] inquiry that appeared in our last newsletter. You may recall that a father asked how to teach his child to be humane. Karen had the following great suggestions:
“Reply to John” in Traverse City:
1. Get hold of a copy of “Bambi,” the Disney original which includes the death of Bambi’s mother, and have a quiet, respectful showing with a mix of adults and young children for guests.
2. Name any wildlife who come to the yard, and feed small animals such as birds and squirrels. In talking about them with the child, use the animal’s name, while discussing the animal’s needs, feelings, family, and children. Some of the animals are easily taught to feed from a human hand. Always give them fresh, raw, unsalted, natural seeds or nuts.
3. Take the child to visit any nearby wildlife sanctuaries (not zoos); the people operating these sanctuaries will be those who both speak and feel respect for our brothers and sisters -in feathers and in fur.
