A 24-year-old hunter was found dead on Saturday night near his tree stand in Fond du Lac County, Wisconsin, with the investigation pointing to an “unintended discharge” being the cause.
Deputies with the Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s Office say they got a 911 call just before 8:30 p.m. on Saturday. The caller had reportedly found the victim in the Town of Oakfield.
The victim, later identified as a 24-year-old man from Lomira, had reportedly been hunting in that vicinity earlier in the day. He was found dead near a tree stand with a gunshot wound.
Based on a preliminary investigation, deputies say the gunshot wound is believed to have been from an unintended firing of the gun.
The incident remains under investigation by the Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s Office and the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR).
No additional information was provided.
According to the DNR, about one-third of injuries in hunting incidents are self-inflicted. The DNR warns hunters to use a full-body harness when in a tree stand and a haul line to raise and lower weapons, which should be unloaded.
