UK: Man, 21, dies in accidental shooting during fox hunting trip as gardai launch probe into ‘freak accident’ in rural area

A GARDA probe is under way after a young man died after an accidental shooting during a hunting trip.

The victim, 21, was understood to have been hunting for foxes near Leighlinbridge, Co Carlow, on Tuesday evening with another man when he suffered a gunshot wound.

He was later pronounced dead.

Gardai were today continuing their technical examination of the remote area.

Officers are also understood to have interviewed another man who was with him at the time of the incident.

It’s understood the victim lives just a few miles from where the incident took place.

One source said: “This is a very tragic incident and is being treated as an accidental shooting.

“Sadly a young man suffered a serious injury and later lost his life.

“Gardai are providing support to his family at this time.”

Gardai confirmed an investigation was underway.

“A male aged in his early 20s sustained fatal injuries.

“Enquiries are ongoing and no further information is available at this time.”

Local Fine Gael councillor Michael Doran offered his condolences to the young man’s family.

He told us: “We are all very saddened to hear that a young man has lost his life and our thoughts are with all the families affected by this tragedy.

“It’s awful to think that something like this has happened in the run up to Christmas.

“It looks as if this was a freak accident and it’s just so tragic.

“The local community is truly shocked that a young man has lost his life.”
