Part of a hunter’s left leg has been amputated due to the accidental discharge of a .300 Win Mag in hunting camp, according to the latest press release from Grant County Sheriff Todd McKinley. Our newsroom first reported the incident on Friday as first responders were on the scene. Find the Sheriff’s full press release on the incident below:

On November 3rd 2023 near 0850am, the Grant County Emergency Communication Center received a 911 call reporting that a hunter had been accidentally shot in the Standard Creek area of Dixie Mountain. 

Grant County Deputies, Prairie City and John Day Ambulances, and Oregon State Troopers all responded to the area North East of Prairie City. 

The victim, 27-year-old Kushaiah Dahlen, of Adams Oregon, was carried out of the remote camp, then transported in a pickup to the waiting ambulance. 

Dahlen was shot in both of his lower legs by a .300 Winchester Magnum Model 70 rifle, that was being strapped onto a backpack on the front rack of a four-wheeler, by a member of the hunting party, Corey Scott Rennels, 62, of Lakeview. 

Reportedly the accident was witnessed by multiple party members at the camp, and their rapid actions and applying a tourniquet more than likely saved Dahlen’s life. 

Dahlen was eventually flown to St. Charles Medical Center in Bend where he successfully underwent surgery that required the removal of a portion of his left leg and foot. 

This event could have had a much more tragic outcome, and we are thankful it did not, and appreciative for the immediate care Kushaiah received on scene and by the various Grant County Medical staff.
