A 28-year-old has been sentenced to pay a record-setting restitution in Ohio after wildlife officials report he illegally shot a trophy deer.
According to a press release, Christopher J. Alexander, 28, of Wilmington was ordered to pay $35,071.73. Officials with the Ohio Department of Natural Resources say it’s the largest restitution value for a single white-tailed deer in Ohio’s history.

Officials said the 18-point buck was shot in November 2023. FOX 8 News previously reported the deer was taken on private property during archery hunting season. Investigators said Alexander didn’t obtain written permission to hunt on the private property.
In addition, officials said, Alexander received a 10-year hunting license revocation and forfeited all property seized as evidence, including the trophy deer’s antlers. He was also sentenced to complete five years of community control and six months of community service.
The Ohio Division of Wildlife started an investigation after receiving information that the deer was taken unlawfully.
Officials said that in October, Alexander pleaded guilty to 14 counts related to the incident, as well as the unlawful taking of another antlered deer.
