State authorities are investigating after police said a deer was illegally killed this past weekend in Brownstown Township.

A caller in the Wayne County community reported hearing gunshots in the area of Telegraph and West roads, police said in a social media post.

An officer found a vehicle he believed was connected to illegal hunting. In coordination with a Michigan Department of Natural Resources conservation officer, police found a suspected hunting site, a spent shell casing and a .270 caliber rifle that had been hidden in the woods, authorities said.

They also found a deer carcass and the suspected illegal hunter. The suspect hasn’t been identified; the DNR is now handling the case, police said.

DNR representatives didn’t immediately return a message seeking information.

Licensed hunters using a regular firearm may generally take deer from authorized hunting grounds around the state between Nov. 15-30, or with a muzzleloader from Dec. 5-14, according to the DNR.

However, police said the only location authorized for gun hunting in Brownstown Township is the Pointe Mouilee State Game Area.

“Violations not only put wildlife at risk but can endanger our community. Offenders are subject to criminal charges, seizure of their firearms, deer and loss of hunting licenses,” Browntown police said on Facebook.
