A man was brought to the hospital Friday afternoon after he was shot in the abdomen while hunting, according to Edgartown police.

Emergency responders were called to the Manuel F. Correllus State Forest shortly after 4 p.m., in an area along Barnes Road just off the runway at the Martha’s Vineyard Airport, said Edgartown police Lieut. Michael Snowden.

The man, who was not identified by police, was hunting with about 10 other people in the forest and a preliminary investigation suggested he was accidentally shot by another member of his party, according to Lieut. Snowden.

Edgartown police were working with Massachusetts Environmental Police Friday evening to investigate the shooting. Lieut. Snowden did not know the extent of the man’s injuries.

The man did not have Island ties, according to police.

The shooting took place on the second to last day of the two-week shotgun hunting season for deer.
