A Raceland man who was killed in a hunting accident was fatally wounded in one of three unrelated Lafourche Parish shootings that occurred over the course of about 14 hours this weekend, Sheriff Craig Webre said Sunday afternoon.

Garret Verdun, 45, was shot in the head and killed while hunting with a friend near Bayou Folse Road on Saturday afternoon, Webre said. The rifle discharged while the two hunters were handling it, according to Webre.

The shooting was reported to the Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office at around 4 p.m., and Webre said the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries is assisting with the investigation.

About five hours later, another shooting was reported in the 100 block of Headland Drive in Thibodaux, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

Webre said a man in his 20s was shot in the leg once during what detectives believe was a domestic disturbance. The man was treated at a local hospital and later released, Webre said.

The third shooting was reported just after 5:30 a.m. Sunday in Cut Off. A West 72nd Street resident shot a man in the arm after he trespassed and began acting erratically, eventually throwing a metal object at the resident, according to the Sheriff’s Office. The man, who is in his 30s, was brought to a local hospital and then airlifted to University Medical Center in New Orleans, Webre said.

All three shootings remained under investigation as of Sunday afternoon.
