A 73-year-old man was injured when a crossbow incident led to a car crash Monday morning.

At approximately 6:11 a.m. Monday, the Grant County Sheriff’s Office received a report of a single-vehicle crash along Highway 35/81, just west of Lancaster. The man had traveled a quarter-mile off the roadway before crashing into trees near the caller’s house.

Upon arrival, police learned that the man was preparing to hunt on property near Millstream Lane, outside Cassville, when his crossbow discharged. The bolt with a broadhead hit him in the right ankle.

He attempted to drive himself to the hospital. Police say the man passed out behind the wheel, causing his vehicle to leave the roadway and cross hundreds of yards of field before hitting trees.

The caller heard the crash, saw the vehicle’s flashing lights outside, and immediately called first responders.

The man was taken to the hospital for injuries and later taken to a larger medical facility for advanced care. His vehicle sustained heavy damage and required towing.

The Grant County Sheriff’s Office has referred the hunting incident to the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources.
