A Bowmanville man has been convicted of illegal hunting following an incident in northern Ontario.
On Oct. 16, 2023, the man was hunting moose along Marline Lake Road, about 100 kilometres north of Nipigon, when he discharged a high-powered rifle across and down a roadway toward a pair of moose. He later shot toward a moose on top of a hill without a safe backstop, “posing a serious risk to public safety,” the Ministry of Natural Resources stated in a news release.
Nickolas Caravan pleaded guilty to carelessly discharging a firearm while moose hunting. He was fined $7,000 and was issued a five-year hunting ban. He is also required to successfully complete the Ontario Hunter Education Course and the Canadian Firearms Safety Course before reapplying for a hunting licence.
Justice of the Peace Nancy Tulloch heard the case remotely in the Ontario Court of Justice in Thunder Bay on Feb. 24.
